Welcome to UnEarthed. A place where you can
break apart those old habits and sprout some new, healthier roots. Join us in learning more about a whole food
plant based lifestyle. My name is Teddy and I am a wife, mother, and family
physician.
I first
started blogging in 2010 when I was accepted into medical school and truly
enjoyed sharing my experience. During my third year of medical school I spent
some really eye opening time in the ICU where I was exposed to patients who
were not much older than me and were seriously ill or dying of preventable
diseases (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc.). I didn’t want to end up like
them. With a BMI in the obese category and my most recent physical showing some
alarming trends in blood pressure and cholesterol, I was scared. I had
struggled with my weight since I was in my early 20s and it had caused myself
esteem to plummet. I remember coming home after a long day in the ICU and crying
on the patio of our little apartment to my husband. I was exhausted, I had no
idea where to start but I knew I didn’t want to live like I had been. I wanted
to be healthy, loose the weight, feel strong and prevent an early death. My
poor husband looked at me and said he would do anything I wanted, the problem
was I had no idea where to begin. There was so much confusing information out
there on nutrition. It was the following morning that I sat down on the couch
with a cup of coffee flipping through the channels on TV when I landed on the
PBS special Eat to Live by Dr. Fuhrman. I remember it like it was yesterday. It
was a Sunday, the day my life changed. I ordered his book and devoured it. So
naturally I read every single book he had written, joined his website and the
rest is history. We embraced the nutritarian lifestyle and never looked back. That
was 5 years ago. I have lost 60 pounds, had another baby and am getting ready
to graduate from Family Medicine Residency program. I have learned a whole lot
more about nutrition since then and even met Dr. Fuhrman when he came to speak
at a family medicine symposium that I organized. My journey however is not complete.
As the next chapter begins I hope to share with you our struggles and successes.
I hope you will join us on this new journey of lifestyle medicine, where we
will teach you how to prevent, treat and reverse chronic disease with a whole
food plant based lifestyle.
